Flight Responses in Adult Care

Staff Meeting in a Box: understanding and supporting flight responses in adult care.

This ‘Staff Meeting in a Box’ contains a slideshow presentation and accompanying resource pack. Each includes key information, questions, activities, reflection points and links to further reading.

Use the slideshow as a structure for your staff meetings. It’s helpful if you are able to display the slideshow for everyone to see. Print the resource pack for everyone to complete during the session.

Topic: Flight Responses in Adult Care

The flight response is an automatic reaction to threat, either real or perceived.

When someone feels overwhelmed, distressed, or unsafe, their nervous system may drive them to create distance from the situation by leaving, withdrawing or seeking space. This response is not a deliberate choice, but a protective strategy aimed at reducing stress and restoring a sense of safety and control.

Understanding what this behaviour is communicating helps us understand what is going on for the individual and devise the best supports.
